E3G

I set up a small and feisty think tank as Executive Director of E3G Inc. I set the vision and hired a team to work across sectors and international regimes to develop energy, finance, economy, and trade commitments for governments. As Senior Associate for the past year, I pushed for reform of the World Bank– mission critical for climate goals — through thought leadership (see here, here and here), convenings in Washington, Bali, Dubai, Marrakesh, and political outreach. My efforts contributed to a new President of the World Bank, a new vision and mission, more lending headroom and a new platform to provide additional incentives to tackle global challenges. Not enough, but a start. With E3G, I drew on political economy analysis to build coalitions and identify high leverage opportunities for climate action such as this report based on a two-year project focused on Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam’s coal to clean energy transition.

The Rockefeller Foundation

I have worked with RF for the past five years as a grantee and as an independent consultant. I helped shape and execute their Global Economic Resilience initiative. We influenced Italy’s G20 to create the Taskforce for Review of the Capital Adequacy Framework which to date has unlocked a $250 billion of MDB headroom. I managed a dialogue series to find ways to scale the innovative Just Energy Transition Partnerships (see here for recommendations). I acted as taskmaster for a joint project with RF and Growald Foundation aiming to galvanize a coalition of middle-income countries to demand at-scale support packages to speed up their energy transition.

US Department of Energy

I was charged with mobilizing commitments from business and investor community ahead of the Clean Energy Ministerial hosted in San Francisco in 2016. In mere weeks, we mobilized $1.5 billion – as catalogued in the White House Fact Sheet. I stayed on to build out the Mission Innovation initiative working closely with the Breakthrough Energy Coalition. I oversaw the development and launch of the MI Champions prize competition.

City of Los Angeles

I ran a Delivery Unit for Mayor Villaraigosa focused on removing the obstacles to delivery of his signature campaign promises including hiring 1000 net new cops, greening the port, reducing gang violence and increasing economic development. I ran a process to define the mayor’s second term agenda and political strategy.

The Labour Party

I cut my teeth working in the Policy Unit of the Labour Party first on health policy, then economic and international policy. When promoted to Head of Policy I led the party’s policy-making process and managed several by-election campaigns. In 2015, I did another brief stint as Chief of Staff on Liz Kendall’s campaign for Leader of the Labour Party. She lost. I moved back to the US, while many of my teammates went on to win the Labour leadership, and 2024 UK general election, with Keir Starmer.
